12×12 layout: an album page step by step
How to organise photo, title and journaling on a 12×12 inch page without it looking empty or overcrowded.
The 12×12 format is the classic album page. It gives room to tell a story, but it also intimidates. This zone structure removes the fear of the blank page.
Supplies
- 12×12 inch cardstock base
- 2–3 papers from one collection
- 1 to 3 printed photos
- Adhesive, foam and small embellishments
- Title (stamp, die or lettering)
Step by step
-
Divide the page into zones
Mentally: photo zone (largest), title zone, journaling zone, embellishment zone. You do not need to draw them; just decide where each goes before gluing.
-
Build the photo block
Photo on one or two slightly larger paper layers. Place it off centre (rule of thirds), not dead middle.
-
Add the title near the photo
The title anchors the story. Short and readable. If it is large, it should not compete in size with the photo.
-
Write 3–5 lines of journaling
Date, place and one sentence only you would know. A few honest lines beat an empty paragraph.
-
Finish in a cluster
Three embellishments together near the title or a corner of the photo. Leave the rest of the page calm.
Practical tips
- If you use several photos, make one clearly the main one.
- Photograph the layout before gluing: the phone screen shows imbalances.
FAQ
How many photos fit?
One well-worked photo usually beats five tiny ones. If you want several, group them in a single block.
